Hello Mi Fans
Xiaomi has recently launched a new series in India - Redmi Y1 series for Mi Fans who love taking selifes and who seek good display and performance. This smartphone has been recently trending on many media houses. In this thread, we have covered what media has to say about the new selfie king. So let's get started!

The Xiaomi Redmi Y1 takes the company down a new road, catering to India’s growing love for selfies. After plenty of teasers and lots of speculation as to what Xiaomi plans to launch, the Chinese company has finally launched its latest phone. The Xiaomi Redmi Y1 is a new device, launched globally in India. It’s targeted at the selfie-loving Indian, with its 16-megapixel front camera and flash. With prices starting from Rs 8,999, it’s aimed squarely at Vivo and Oppo, two competing brands that have captured the offline space in India with similar positioning.

Redmi Y1 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 SoC, and comes with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. While I haven’t extensively used it, performance is in line with what you’d expect from a device with these specifications. With enough RAM and storage, the device will appeal to budget buyers that need a bit more from their phone when it comes to multi-tasking and media content.

Most smart phone brands have followed the herd mentality when it comes to creating USPs for their devices. Priorities change every year and what follows is a barrage of devices with ridiculously similar specs at very confusing price-points. And then there are a few brands focused on mixing and matching specs, and providing combos of looks and performance at affordable price points. The Redmi range from Xiaomi belongs to this latter category. After addressing the Indian entry-level smart phone scene with the Note 4, 4 and 4A, the company has just launched the Y-series smartphones, meant for enhanced camera performance.

Powered by the Snapdragon 435 processor, the Y1 comes with a 5.5-inch HD screen, and weighs 153 grams. Another useful feature is the 2+1 card slot configuration, which supports simultaneous usage of two nano sim cards, along with a micro SD card expandable to 128GB. The Y1 comes at an asking price of Rs. 8,999 for the 3GB + 32GB variant and Rs 10,999 for the 4GB + 64GB variant. Additionally, Xiaomi has also launched the Y1 Lite, with a 13MP + 5MP camera configuration, the Snapdragon 425 processor, which pretty much the same other specs as the Y1. The Lite (2GB + 16GB) is priced at Rs 6,999.

Xiaomi Redmi Y1 quick review: Playing the selfie game under Rs 10,000
By India Today Tech

The Redmi Y1 is a little different from other Xiaomi Redmi phones in the market right now. And no we are not just talking about the design and the amount of plastic that Xiaomi has used in this phone. Until the Redmi Y1 happened, Xiaomi's Redmi phones were sold as a complete package and not on the basis of one or two stand-out traits. It was this package deal that ensured Xiaomi was able to sell those Redmi phones by the dozen. The Redmi 4A, the Redmi 4 and the Redmi Note 4 are prime examples of that strategy. But the Redmi Y1 banks heavily on one particular trait: it's a Redmi phone designed for taking great selfies, which is why it comes with a whopping 16-megapixel camera on the front. This also invariably means it has been designed for a certain target audience -- the youth, according to Xiaomi.

This is a rather new strategy for the Redmi phones. Mi phones have gone down this path earlier. A Mi perhaps -- take the gigantic Mi Max 2, or the futuristic Mi Mix 2 for instance -- has one or two big features but no Redmi has ever tread this -- unusual -- road before. This is because Redmi phones, since they were introduced here in India, have been all about low costs and noteworthy hardware. The Redmi Y1, however, is about low costs, noteworthy hardware, and an extra ounce of selfie-taking goodness. While low costs and noteworthy hardware have come to become a habit for Xiaomi, it's that extra ounce of selfie-taking goodness that sets the Redmi Y1 apart from any other Redmi phone in the market right now.

Why Xiaomi why? Why the Redmi Y?
By Gizmodo

At an event in New Delhi today, Xiaomi launched a new selfie-centric series in India. The Y1 sits comfortably between the Redmi 4 and Redmi Note 4, both of which were launched this year as well and have amassed huge success. Its budget lineup includes the Redmi 4A, 4 and the Note 4. As per the latest Counterpoint report, Xiaomi went from 6 percent in Q3 of last year to capture 22 percent of smartphone market share by Q3 of 2017 closing in on Samsung which controls 23 percent of the market. The top three smartphones in India are from the house of Xiaomi and that says something about the fan-following of the company.

But does Xiaomi need to go after brands like Oppo and Vivo who just focus on outfitting their smartphones with a good selfie camera and let go of the user experience? Xiaomi has garnered a cult following in India largely due to the price point it caters to with top-of-the-line specifications that can fit into that budget category. The reason why Redmi Note 4 is such a huge success is because of these qualities of the company that they bring over to their smartphones.

After the launch of its flagship Mi Mix series and the Android One-powered Redmi A series in India, Xiaomi has launched yet another new product line in the country. Dubbed Redmi Y, this will be a lineup of selfie-focused smartphones. The first model in the series is the Xiaomi Redmi Y1, and we got to spend some time with the device for a while prior to its official unveiling. Here are our first impressions.

The Xiaomi Redmi Y1 has the same design elements as other devices in the Redmi series. At the front is a 5.5-inch HD display with Corning Gorilla Glass protection, and non-backlit capacitive touch buttons for Android navigation. The highlight of the Redmi Y1 is its 16-megapixel selfie shooter which gets a diffused selfie flash. At the back, there's a 13-megapixel camera with a single-LED flash, and a fingerprint scanner positioned in the centre. The fingerprint scanner is easy to reach, and it unlocked the phone every single time without any hiccups. Unlike the current Xiaomi Redmi 4 and Redmi Note 4, this new phone does not have a metal unibody. Instead, it has a plastic back panel, the power and volume buttons are on the right, and are also made of plastic.

Xiaomi Redmi Y1 series first impression: Cost-effective selfie phone
By IB Times

Xiaomi's new Redmi Y1 and the Y1 Lite come with a decent set of hardware and we were particularly impressed with the front camera.Xiaomi has unveiled the company's brand new selfie camera oriented Redmi Y1 and the Y1 Lite phone series in India.

The new Redmi Y1 is the standard model with top-notch hardware, while the Y1 Lite, as the name suggests, is the watered down version. I spent a brief time with the devices at the demo lounge after the launch in New Delhi and here's my take on them. Both the phones flaunt pretty identical design language in terms of exterior body. They come with 5.5-inch HD (1280x720p) display with curved edges around the corners and smooth metallic cover on the back. They also come with the power button on the right side with volume rockers on top and hybrid SIM tray slot with the option of two SIMs and dedicated space for microSD slot, a long-awaited feature finally incorporated by the company. But, differ in three aspects: Y1 flaunts a dedicated LED flash with 16MP snapper on the front and a fingerprint sensor on the back. It also features 2.5D curved glass layer on the front panel.
