High-quality products, affordable price, MIUI are some of the key drivers and secret of success for Xiaomi. However, Xiaomi is facing another foe: counterfeiters in China and Global market. Counterfeit goods are fake items deliberately made to look genuine. These goods can cause massive losses in revenue to companies and damage their reputation. We often receive complaints from users that they have bought fake Mi products especially via third party online platforms. Among the most popular counterfeit Mi products are Mi Powerbank and Mi phones.
In Singapore, there are many unofficial distributors such as shops on Qoo10. We believe it is important to equip consumers with such knowledge before purchasing!
Lei Jun called fake goods, “a social cancer, a serious damage to the image of the country and consumer confidence,” and said it was time to support efforts to get rid of them. In this thread, we are going to learn how to identify the original and fake Xiaomi phones in two simple steps.
1. Mi Verification App
Mi Verification App is developed by Xiaomi for users to identify whether the Mi or Redmi phone on their hand is fake or genuine. A simple test will be conducted to test the hardware, performance, and your device history. A fake Mi phone will fail in any of the three tests. Some users might face some problem during verification process, we've reported to our developer. However, as long as you bought your Mi phones from official store then you don't have to worry about that.
com.xiaomi.antifake2.apk (1.32 MB, Downloads: 25739) (Please log in to the forum to download it)
Note: An active internet connection is needed in both Mi device and PC/ Laptop/Phone
▲ Tap on the Mi Verification app once you've installed it.
▲ There is an option to "Scan and Verify" at the bottom. Click it and a scanner interface will be shown, open jd.mi.com with another PC/ Laptop/Phone and scan it.
Check out the number of counterfeits in red color. There are so many Mi phones have failed the test. Surely we don't want our device to fall into that category.
▲ The test is ongoing and takes very short time to complete it
▲ Once the test is completed, check out the result and details on the webpage.
2. MIUI version
After you have done the Mi Verification step, check out the MIUI version installed in the device by Settings > About Phone. Compare the MIUI version in your device with MIUI ROM uploaded on Official MIUI Download page . If you are able to match both the MIUI version then you have official MIUI ROM installed. You will be able to receive OTA update if you are having official MIUI ROM in your device.
Some users reported that they have not received any single MIUI update, ROM full with virus and spyware, apps get downloaded automatically and overlay advertisement. If that's the case you might have tampered ROM installed in your device. A tampered ROM (also known as unofficial ROM or fake ROM) is a ROM that has been modified by individuals to have different features or settings. For example, a China ROM is tampered with pre-installed Google Apps and some bloatwares. Third party sellers usually flash this ROM into new devices before selling to users outside China, as Google Apps are essential for global users.
The screenshot above is Mi device pre-installed with tampered ROM. You can clearly see that the MIUI version is odd and they cannot be found in the download page. If you are not unsure about it, do post a thread in your device subforum with a screenshot of your about phone. Our moderator will assist you.

How to avoid buying Mi phone with tampered ROM/ Fake Mi phones?
Purchase Mi device only from official store ! !
Please do visit mi.com to shop online for Mi smartphones, accessories and gadgets. Official store offers warranty to Mi products and for handset defects under normal use circumstances, free of charge repair service will be provided within the warranty period.
There are only 3 official distributors of Xiaomi Products in Singapore
1) Mi Authorised Reseller Store - 3 Temasek Boulevard, Suntec City Mall, #02-337-340, Singapore 038983
2) Mi Authorised Service Center - 6 Eu Tong Sen Street, The Central, #04-89D Singapore 059817
3) Authorised Online Store - lazada.sg/mistore
We don't want out beloved Mi Fans to get cheated by irresponsible reseller. Normally those resellers will offer their own warranty but it's extremely difficult to claim it. They will find a lot of excuses and refuse to repair the phone. Most of them will also install tampered ROM full with spyware and advertisement into your device. Spyware can collect almost any type of data, including personal information like internet surfing habits, user logins, and bank or credit account
Some reseller even login your device before reaches your hand. We have seen too many problems raised on our forum especially after OTA update. "This device is locked: This device is associated with an existing Mi Account. For security reasons, you need to enter password to verify the device." error will be shown and they are unable to login as the Mi account belongs to the reseller and not the user.
There are devices and gadgets which sold exclusively only for China market. We know some of them are really attractive but please do keep in mind that the device purchased might not work in your country and you'll get limited support. For example Mi 4c, Mi 5c and Redmi Pro. Those devices are only for China market thus there's no global ROM support for the device. It's simple to understand but users tend to blame MIUI Developers for not releasing global ROM. If you still insist to buy from third party reseller then i am afraid you might need to bear the consequences.
