Love all the additions to the series. Not a big fan of wearables myself but I really appreciate that with one of these you can ride China's transit systems. It would be such a cool thing to have over here but we're still using those tired old Metrocards. The new addition though the fact that you can use UnionPay cards is also incredible. Over here while it is still very rare to see someone use it we have the NFC payment systems from Google and Apple. And each time I see someone use it I just cringe with the thought of such an expensive device getting that close to a hard surface. And I'm not the only one. Many people using their phones now to pay for public transit are holding up the line because they are doing it slowly and carefully so they don't break their devices by accident. This both causes more time to be spent in line and also plenty of failed scans. NFC is really just not a good replacement for RFID as a contact medium. Meanwhile the Mi Bands have both NFC and the superior QR and since it's a cheap fitness band you aren't going to worry too much about it clacking against the readers. This way they keep the lines moving and do a better job and if NFC fails there's always QR to fall back on. (or even better just skip the dumb NFC method all together and go for QR first. This is also unavailable around here.......) |
