Genius is the largest online song lyrics database and music knowledge resource in general. Initially named Rap Genius, it was created to help users understand the punchlines of their favourite rappers. It has now become the largest online library for music knowledge built by the community of song lovers themselves.
The knowledge is crowdsourced from the genius community who are die-hard fans of music, with measures in place to ensure that the correct annotations or lyrics are submitted. The songwriters are also invited to verify their own lyrics on the platform as well as break down the meaning of their songs to the genius community.
Genius App has a colour theme of white and yellow and an excellent black and yellow theme in dark mode - set via general phone settings not from within the App.
Launching the app lands the user on it's home page, which contains news, charts, videos in several sub categories including news, the cosign, verified, open mic, for the record etcetera. Users can also find community learning resources, features, most recent stories and so on.
Within this home UI, there's a stationed interface like a header at the top, beneath which all other content can scroll through. The stationed interface holds the search Icon at the right and the sections Icon at the left, so the user can always find these Icons at the top-right and top-left while at the home interface regardless of how deep the user has scrolled.
The listen button on the other hand can be found on the bottom right floating above the scrollable content. It is a circular purple icon.
The stationed sections Icon, reveals all the sections of the app with a slide-in from the left, indicating the user's current section with a red tag and Icon colour. A user's profile picture can also been seen within this interface.
Besides home, sections within the app include Videos, Search, Identify Music, My Music, Profile, Notifications, Messages and Settings.
The first category within this section is the news. Recent events about musicians are documented and presented as a blog post with links to other media that confirms the news. The author and the date of publication can also be seen beneath the story.
Users can share their thoughts too about the news in the comment section of each of the story.
Following the news is the chart. The charts records the music that has had the most user interactions on the platform, including all-time views and real-time views. The tracks are ranked based on their real-time views. Within the Charts sub-section there are filters which can help users narrow search either with time or genre.
The videos category is what's next on the queue. It has several subcategories where different topics are addressed, artists react to comments, artiste perform and also video news. Some of the sub categories titles include News, Open Mic, For The Record, The Cosign etcetera.
The following section let's you learn about the Genius community. It contains resources where new or old users can learn about the work flow of the community. Including how lyrics can be added, annotations appended etcetera.
Features is a container of information which are not necessarily news but are as well important such as artists changing their names, information about albums about to be launched, events cancelled because of the pandemic etcetera.
It ends with the Latest category where a mixture of recent content from all the categories are provided.
This section is library of videos from all previously listed sub categories and even more. In addition to the News, Open Mic, For the Record, Verified, The Cosign, there is also Between the lines, Deconstructed, IRL, The Genius Test, Framework, Genius Level and Centerstage sub-categories.
In addition to the search Icon stationed at the top right, it has a section of its own in the sections panel. Both of these features lead to the same interface where the user can search for any song on Genius. The interface holds a text and an audio input at the top of the page. Your search history is also visible as well as some suggested and trending songs. To remove a song from the search history a user just needs to swipe it left. Suggestions and trending songs can not be swiped out.
Just like the popular Shazam, Genius can identify a music by listening to it. Besides getting to the feature through this options panel, there's a circular floating button at the bottom left on the home interface.
Contrary to what most users might think, that this section displays music from their local library, this section holds lyrics of songs that a user has checked as "favourite". "Favouriting" on the Genius app reserves the song for offline viewing. Within this section as well, recently viewed and Identified songs are recorded, although not available for offline viewing.
The profile section is the next on the panel. The section contains the user's profile picture, username, participation points as well as his/her accomplishments. It also holds a button where the user can see his inbox. The search button is also placed here, in addition to a sharing button, to share your accomplishments within the App.
The section simply notifies you of your point worthy actions within the community.
The messages can also be accessed from the sections panel besides the user profile. Opening a message, reveals like a chat interface where the user can send a message to the community directly.
This is the last feature on the sections panel. Within the section a user can connect either or both his Google or Facebook account to Genius. The theme can also be altered here to light, dark or system default. Logging out from user's account can also be done here. The help category within this section holds the privacy policies, terms of services, about genius and contributor guidelines. Lastly the advanced category allows a user to wipe all search history.
Genius' MVP - Lyrics Page
This is perhaps the most important interface in all of the Genius App, as it is the interface that meets the need of the users who sought apps like these. Hence this aspect will be critically and analytically reviewed.
The top of this interface holds four buttons or icons; return icon, favourite or make available offline icon, share Icon and the search Icon. Beneath this is the title of the song written in Large yellow fonts and the author directly following this in white fonts (Not as large). Note that when you scroll up the lyrics, the Large yellow title fonts diminishes into a normal sized white fonts.
Three other features are present in the title section of this Lyrics page namely; views count, About song, and Credits. The View count reveals the number of users who has ever viewed the song and the number of users currently viewing it. The about song part takes the user to a generally accepted summary about the song being viewed. Finally, the credits feature takes the user to an interface that reveals all who has contributed to create the song and add annotations. From this interface, you can view other works from the same artist, writer, album or producer. How cool is that?!
The title section of the page has an album picture background on which all these features rest upon.
Floating on right side border of the title section lies the play button. The is button sources the music video of the lyrics being read from YouTube and displays it to the user at the bottom of the page. The video may just be a lyric video if there's no official video yet for the song.
Scrolling down the page, after the lyrics, reveals, where a user can correct the current lyrics, then other songs in the same album from which the currently viewed one is from. After this, there are user comments.
Some lyrics are highlighted. Tapping on these highlighted lyrics slides in the annotation page from the left where users can see the buried meaning behind the lines. In the annotation page, other users also share their views and also suggest corrections.
• With Genius, you can track your notifications and for any song on play, get the lyrics suggested immediately.
• You can easily Identify any song, just play it close to your device with Genius listening.
• Confused about what the artiste mean? Genius provides community based annotations for you.
• Users cannot watch video and read lyrics simultaneously. Lyrics should be placed within the video somehow.
• After reading notification, users still say notified. There should be made available some "mark as read" button.
Genius is an innovative app that provides users not only with lyrics but with meanings to these lyrics fetched from the wisdom of its community. Any user can share their opinions of a song and with the proper measures in place, yours might be verified to be the correct opinion over the others. The App has a rating of 4.2/5 on playstore with over 67k reviews. That's a good rating for such a high number of users.
