![]() Hi Mi Fans, Welcome to yet another episode of Tech Wednesday ! Today we'll discuss about facial recognition enabled payment mentioned and is it secured enough to be used. Face recognition technology brings the next step in payments convenience for consumers and also has the potential to bring in a whole new wave of less tech-savvy users, such as the elderly or those who struggle to read and write.
The technology that goes behind facial recognition systems is very different than the fingerprint. A fingerprint needs finger to be close to the scanning machine to scan, whereas, for face recognition systems, the scanner can scan it from a distance. ![]() Various points on our faces are called nodal points. A facial recognition system has about 80 such nodal points using which a faceprint is created. To make payments using faceprints, every face has to be linked to their bank accounts. This data, along with the identity databases helps connect the face with the bank account. Instead of paying via cash or QR code, the citizens can then scan their faces on a screen mounted on the payment window and have the fare automatically deducted from their linked accounts.
In February, a data leak revealed that Shenzhen surveillance software maker SenseNets stored the location data of millions of people in an insecure database. The database also included national ID numbers and dates of birth, potentially much more sensitive than facial recognition data. In response to concerns over the risks of artificial intelligence-based face swap apps that might collect personal facial photos, Chinese mobile payment platform Alipay (using the facial payment tech) said the current technology cannot trick facial recognition payment no matter how real the photos are. Facial recognition has existed for decades, but only now is it accurate enough to be used in secure financial transactions. The new versions use deep learning, an artificial-intelligence technique that is especially effective for image recognition because it makes a computer zero in on the facial features that will most reliably identify a person.
