The megapixel race is on, now that the Redmi Note 8 Pro is the first smartphone in the market with a 64MP camera. Where do we go next?
As we have seen that recently, smartphone cameras have made major improvements in image processing, as well as the inclusion of better and affordable multiple-lens systems. As the race to develop better imaging quality continues, we’re also seeing several other trends emerging in the smartphone imaging space.
So, on to the main topic of this thread, what's the difference between 64MP and 48MP? Samsung released their latest breakthrough in mobile photography with its 64MP ISOCELL Bright GW1 & updated 48MP ISOCELL Bright GM2 sensor. Meanwhile, Sony’s stacked CMOS design in the IMX586 is a leap in image quality by dramatically increasing the resolution to 48 effective megapixels (8000 x 6000).
As we have witnessed, Redmi Note 8 Pro comes with a 64MP camera while Redmi Note 8 with the 48MP camera. The Samsung’s 64MP GW1 sensor uses 4-in-1 pixel merging TetraCell technology to merge four 0.8 micron pixels into a single 1.6-micron pixel to offer detailed images in low light conditions. In addition to that, it supports DCG dynamic ISO technology, which intelligently adjusts ISO sensitivity based on ambient light intensity. In a high-brightness environment, it uses low ISO, and in a low-light environment, it uses high ISO to achieve the best signal-noise ratio for the entire scene. It can also shoot raw 64MP photos with the main sensor. Meanwhile both the GM2 and IMX586 have a 48MP monochrome sensor with Tetracell and Quad Bayer (4 in 1 Bayer) Filter respectively for their RGB that's both defaults to 12MP output. The only difference is the way both sensors converts the pixel array to create the 48MP images.
The biggest difference between 64MP and 48MP is that 64MP has 34% more pixels over 48MP meaning far more detail is captured in each image. But regardless of this, both the 64MP module in the Redmi Note 8 Pro and the 48MP in the Redmi Note 8 are class-leading, capturing super-detailed images with a great dynamic range and accurate colours.
Another benefit of a 64MP high resolution camera is it can output larger size pictures. This means you can zoom in to the picture and crop it without compromising quality. Here is a shot that will amaze you - the detail retained around the owl’s eye once we zoom in is incredible!
As for the future, through a close collaboration between Xiaomi and Samsung, the ISOCELL Bright HMX was developed which captures images in 108MP, a resolution equivalent to that of a high-end DSLR camera which Samsung has unveiled.
