Dial *#*#6484#*#*, select Proximity; idle data should be at around 1000; test different distances from sensor, you should see peaks over 6000 units at close distance.

Thanks for the asnwer.Any idea where is the best adjustment for this. Also do you know anything about the build in headphone?

Xiaomi phones not advertised with an additional physical audio enhancement will have weak amplifier. In ear (IEM) microphone recommendations as of my testing (Pocophone F1 as an example) is around 16 to 28 ohm. Over ear Headphones have bigger diaphragm compared to IEMs so they will have weaker volume at the same volume setting. So you might need a headphones lower than 15 ohms (if there exist) for proper volume.

Low volume means that you have an audio accessory, in your case a headphone with higher impedance (measured in ohms) than what the phone amplifier can drive. You can test it by trying some earphones or IEM with impedances within an approximate 16 to 28 ohms. This is based on my own test, for reference, here are my earphones and headphone used for my own testing:

1. KZ ZS6 (great volume)
2. KZ ZST (great volume)
3. Sony MDR-NC8 (low volume)

You can check the Audio section of GSMArena's review of Mi A3 for more details.
Xiaomi does not disclose any kind of amp they use, my findings were purely based on my experience with Xiaomi products since I have a Mi5.

Sucks but as I expected. I can't see this getting a fix so I stuck with my old Mi A2 Lite as that will get 10 and security updates for a good while longer.

Hmmmm. My Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite has perfectly decent headphone volume output. I can't recall them marketing it or the Redmi 6 Pro as having a specific amplifier or audio components. The Mi A3 is just a camera centric budget device (CC9e) that skimps on the quality of audio over the headphone output is all.

This is from the GSM Arena review:-
'Then things got worse as we plugged in our standard headphones. Volume plummeted to way below average, frequency response got shaky, while stereo crosstalk rose an average amount. We also recorded some intermodulation distortion adding up to a performance to forget.'
