[Discussion] [Mi Bunny Asks #13] Do More Megapixels Mean Better Image Quality?

Hello Mi Fans,

Social media and pop culture have redefined our ideas of photography in many ways. Just a few decades ago, photography was reserved for the privileged and talented among us; its use was largely restricted to special occasions and truly interesting moments in life.

Today, however, with the advent of digital photography, taking pictures has become an incessant obsession for many people. As the smartphone market grows increasingly competitive, they continue coming up with newer models with even higher megapixel cameras included. Camera makers and your local Best Buy salesman are always talking about the next model with more megapixels than the one that came before it. The new numbers make your current model seem obsolete. If you bought a camera with 12 megapixels a few years ago, you wish you could get a new one that gets 64. But does it really mean anything? Does having more megapixels amount to better photo quality, or is it all just marketing hype? However, do more megapixels equal better image quality?

as a photographer i will say NO! a 5MP camera can produce a better quality picture than 12MP, the quality really depends on your camera sensor, you only need bigger megapixels if your printing out your photos on bigger sizes or if you like cropping/zooming in your pictures..

more pixels convert not necessarily into better picture quality.
my several years old Lumia 950 gives most modern flagships ( in good light conditions especially) a run for their money ;-)

Depends but it does factor into it. Thing is technology requires all the parts to work together. Yes a 40.1MP camera will be able to capture a much more detailed image than a 1.2MP VGA camera. But as we saw with the Nokia Lumia the software and sensor technology was not available to make use of such a powerful camera that it didn't end up producing a very good image. Meanwhile at only two 12MP cameras our Mi MIX devices were capable of producing images with the same quality as rivals using 16MP triple camera setups. Similarly Google and HTC were able to produce better images with a single powerful lens camera compared to so many of its rivals that were using multiple camera setups for the same purpose.

But at the end of the same having those megapixels still gives you the chance to make good pictures where even the best software and sensors can't really make more out of a 12MP picture than 12MPs worth of picture. Consider we now have powerful enough software to make use of Redmi Note 8's 48MP camera which can print clear HD images at poster sizes!
