Implement Google’s AI supported Super Res Zoom Into MIUI Stock Camera App - MIUI ROM - Mi Community

Xiaomi should implement Google’s AI supported Super Res Zoom, see Ref. 1 (!) into the MIUI stock camera app, which is used in Pixel 3 to improve the quality of digitally zoomed in photos. The feature is called 'Sabre' in the Google Camera code. By using this multiframe based technology, the digital zoom could be enhanced to improve user experience and of course, the quality of digitally zoomed in photos, especially for the devices with the 48 MP sensors. This is especially the case if you compare cropped images ('zoomed in later') with what the ‘Sabre’ algorithms and multiframe processing produces.

Also, please actively use the collaboration between Xiaomi and light.co. If the camera app combined multiple shots from both cameras, this could improve overall picture quality when zooming as well.

Please also read post #5 for some additional thoughts, especially regarding the combination of optical and digital zoom to enhance picture quality and an improved user experience when zooming seamlessly from ultrawide to normal to tele focal lengths. This would bring the user experience close to a DSLR camera with a 17-50mm standard lens with a standard 12 MP photo output.

I've noticed only just now that the poll option 1 is missing some text (probably to long). Poll option 1 should read
" 1. Yes, Xiaomi should improve the digital zoom capabilities, esp. for phones with 48 MP sensors to make use of the resolution to improve digital zoom between 1-2(-4)x zoom levels."

Again, of course this would only work really well in bright daylight conditions, as the 48 MP sensors lack OIS. IIRC Microsoft Lumia 950 XL used similar software they called "Pure View" ...

Some additional thoughts. The Mi 9 has excellent camera hardware. On the photon capturing side, the Mi9 has a triple camera setup which consists of a 48 MP 1/2”Sony IMX586 0.8µm pixel sensor with a F1.75-aperture 26 mm equivalent focal length wide-angle lens, a 16 MP 1/3” Sony IMX481 1.0µm pixel sensor with a F2.2-aperture 17 mm equivalent focal length super-wide-angle lens and a 12 MP 1/3.4” Samsung S5K3M5 1.0µm pixel sensor with a F2.2-aperture 50 mm equivalent focal length tele lens.

The Mi 9 features the Snapdragon 855 and its highly capable Spectra 380 Imaging Signal Processor.

The camera app not as sophisticated, especially for the Global and EEA users.

Here’s what’s missing.

The colours from the three cameras differ. Xiaomi should calibrate the sensors and apply color and tone correction accordingly so that the colours will be the same from every lens. This will be really helpful, especially if you plan to use photos from the three lenses in the same project.

The super-wide-angle lens output should also be 12 MP with excellent software distortion correction. Why? Here is why.

The main lens camera output is 12 MP, the tele lens camera output is 12 MP. It is nice to have a simple native camera app UI. All three lenses should be easily selectable with a single click no matter which shooting mode you’re using, which is another bonus. Better yet, the app should combine digital zooming (Google Sabre Technology?) and selecting lenses into one handy control right on the capture screen. The displayed focal lengths should be able to be quickly selected by tapping the round buttons representing each lens. The user should also be able to swipe over the zoom factor (left/right) to dial in a custom focal length. The digital zoom should combine all three focal lengths, the multiple lenses should work hand in hand to achieve better image quality than traditional digital zoom. Of course, choosing one of the base focal lengths (17 mm, 26 mm, 50 mm) will produce optimal results. By automatically and intelligently combining the sensor signal of more than one lens system, the final image can be optimized for detail, contrast, color, sharpness, dynamic range and low noise.

Zooming seamlessly from ultra-wide to normal to tele focal lengths would greatly improve user experience and help people to be creative. This would bring the user experience close to a DSLR camera with a 17-50mm standard lens with a standard 12 MP photo output!!!

BTW, I really like the Meizu 16s Pro's camera setup as it comes with 48 MP + 20 MP + 16 MP triple rear cameras. The primary sensor is a 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor with an f/1.7 aperture and 4-axis OIS, the secondary camera is a 20MP Sony IMX350 telephoto lens sensor with an f/2.4 aperture, and a 117-degree Sony IMX481 16-megapixel ultrawide lens with f/2.2 aperture. Now if only the tele lens came with OIS, too ...

Reading above's posts this setup produces pixels in abundance and with today's SOC's AI and computing power you should be able to provide a decent 12 MP photo output and seamless zooming across the whole range, all the way from ultra-wide to telephoto ...
