How to prove the Redmi Note 7 is out of this world good? Xiaomi UK team held a special “launch event” few days ago, they launch Redmi Note 7 into space with a weather balloon, and got it back! Redmi Note 7 not only managed to resist to the extremely low temperature and severe conditions of the outer space proving great durability but it’s also been capable to take well-defined shots thanks to its 48MP sensor. ![]() ![]() Find below a Q&A to find out more on what does it really mean to send a smartphone into space! Did you do any special treatment to the balloon or the RN7, cameras and equipment you sent into space? We didn't make any modifications to the RN7 phone. The balloon itself is specially designed and manufactured for this exact purpose. While utilising the same underlying principles as a weather balloon, this is a bespoke piece of equipment designed to carry payloads weighing several kilograms into Near Space. Our cameras are based on GoPro cameras but are modified internally to manage temperature distribution and stability, and enclosed in insulated, electronically temperature controlled pods. Everything else is specially designed and manufactured for this exact purpose too. How do you control the phone to take photos? We carried a total of five Redmi Note 7 to fly into space. One is that everyone saw in the video and we only used it to take a photo with the beautiful Earth. One is used for photographing and placed in a special temperature isolation device. There are also 3 units in the carrying case, which are shut down all the way. For the one used for photographing, we used a third party intervalometer app to take photos every 10 seconds. How long did the whole journey take, from departure to landing? The flight took 2h03m comprising of a 1h27m ascent and a 36m descent. How far did the phone travel, from start to finish (ie length of its flight and landing)? The total flight length was 193km, Finally landed at a distance within 300m of the centre of our predicted landing area. What was coldest temperature it was exposed to? The coldest point on our ascent is just before we pass the ozone layer, where ambient temperature is -58C, ambient temperature at burst altitude is -43C. What was the highest altitude reached by the balloon? 35,375m. Did you charge the 5 phones during the trip? No. Want to win this fantastic limited edition medal?
