Xiaomi Mi Notebook Air running Windows 10 was unveiled at a special event in Beijing. Xiaomi, which is known for its smartphones, has a wider product portfolio in China that includes electric bikes and IoT devices. The Mi Notebook Air is its first Mi branded laptop.

As one can expect from a Xiaomi device, the Mi Notebook Air comes with latest hardware specifications, metal build quality, and an attractive price. Xiaomi Mi Notebook Air is pitted against Apple’s MacBook Air, and has been launched at a time when PC and Mac sales are declining quarter after quarter.

Xiaomi Mi Notebook won’t have an easy time in the PC market. The company has to compete with offerings not only from Apple, but also from other companies like Dell and HP, which have held a strong repute even in the declining PC industry.

Here is how Xiaomi Mi Notebook compares with Apple MacBook Air, Dell XPS 13 and HP Envy 13

Xiaomi Mi Notebook Air: Xiaomi’s first ever laptop sure looks great, both in terms of design and specifications. The laptop features an aluminium unibody design like several other notebooks in the market. Xiaomi’s manufacturing partner Tian Mi has taken note from Microsoft Surface Book, and MacBook Air’s design to build this one with a large trackpad and full-size keyboard. Xiaomi has added its own elements like Mi Cloud, and ability to unlock the device with company’s Mi Band 2 fitness tracker.

Mi Notebook Air’s USP is its price, which comes at relative discount to the peers, just like its smartphones. The Xiaomi Mi Notebook Air starts with Intel Core i5, 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD. By eliminating HDD completely from the scene, Xiaomi has shown it is all about speed and performance. Xiaomi is also promising up to 10 hours of battery life which is fine, but not as much as Apple’s MacBook Air. Mi laptop which translates to approximately Rs 36,000 in India, might never launch here despite the company’s renewed focus on India.

Apple MacBook Air: Since 2008, Apple’s Macbook Air has become the standard for building a great notebook. It’s slim and adequately powerful too. The Macbook Air runs OS X El Capitan with guaranteed upgrade to macOS Sierra. The notebook offers great keyboard and trackpad.

Apple MacBook Air with brushed metal design and aluminium unibody design is definitely one great looking piece of hardware. It is all about premium components, and that backlit Apple logo is an added bonus. It is easy to use with the screen offering no wobble. The 13.3-inch variant comes with a native resolution of 1440 x 900 which is just a little above the HD resolution. With competing devices getting minimum Full HD display, the display is the only letdown about Apple’s MacBook Air.

While the display has a paltry resolution, Macbook Air makes up in the form of a nearly 10 hour battery life.

Dell XPS 13: This is the closest any Windows machine has come to compete MacBook Air. Dell XPS 13 with its black metal design and edge to edge display is a seriously well designed notebook. Like other devices in the range, it is also about premium materials, top of the line specifications, and Dell’s excellent protection plans.

Dell XPS 13 comes with Full HD Infinity Edge display as standard, but can also be configured with a QHD+ panel with a resolution of 3200 x 1800 pixels. Like other Dell notebooks, the XPS 13 also comes with multiple configuration options, and buyers can customise it to a great deal. Dell XPS 13 skips on Windows 10 feature like Hello facial recognition, but it offers full size backlit keyboard, precision touchpad with glass buttons, and two USB 3.0 ports.

Dell XPS 13 weighs just 1.18 Kg and supports latest wireless standards. Dell promises up to 15 hours of battery life, but users can expect at least 10 hours output.

HP Envy 13 is the only notebook in this range to feature a fingerprint sensor

HP Envy 13: HP, which recently announced world’s thinnest notebook, has its own MacBook Air competitor in the form of Envy 13. HP Envy 13 has an aluminium build, chamfered edges and 180 degree flat display panel. HP Envy 13 also has a beautiful full HD IPS display with extremely sharp viewing angles. The laptop is powerful for most day-to-day tasks, and HP has built a great keyboard that offers excellent travel. HP has also managed to nail the trackpad with this one.

Another plus about HP Envy 13 is its Bang and Olufsen Audio, which offers great sound for a laptop of this size. Like Apple Macbook Air and Dell XPS 13, HP Envy 13 promises up to 10 hours of battery life and charges relatively quick. It offers three USB 3.0 ports as well as latest WiFi and Bluetooth standards.

In our review, we called HP Envy 13 as the best Windows 10 notebook available in the market. It is quick, light and offers great display.
