Dear Mi Fans!

This is a new series about all parts of your smartphones and how it works on device!
All modern smartphones are equipped with a special detail - the proximity sensor. And problems with this item can lead to problems when using the phone.

Proximity sensor in the phone: what is it?

The proximity sensor is a small detail of a smartphone that reacts to the physical approach of the device to an object. It is thanks to this sensor when talking on the smartphone that its screen goes out automatically, as soon as the device approaches the ear.

Principle of operation of the sensor!

The principle of operation is based on monitoring the level of infrared radiation in the field of view of the sensor (usually pyroelectric). The signal at the sensor output monotonically depends on the level of IR radiation averaged over the field of view of the sensor. When a person (or other massive object with a temperature greater than the background temperature) appears at the output of the pyroelectric sensor, the voltage rises. In order to determine whether the object is moving, the sensor uses an optical system-the Fresnel lens. Sometimes a system of concave segment mirrors is used instead of the Fresnel lens. Segments of the optical system (lenses or mirrors) focus IR radiation on the pyro element, which produces an electrical pulse. As the source of infrared radiation moves, it is captured and focused by different segments of the optical system, which forms several consecutive pulses. Depending on the sensitivity setting of the sensor, 2 or 3 pulses must be output to the pyroelectric sensor for output of the final signal.

This function is very useful.

First, disabling the screen during a conversation ensures that you do not accidentally press a button on the touch screen, such as the cheek or ear.
Secondly, this sensor allows you to save the charge of your smartphone. After all, if the screen was on fire during conversations, the phone would sit very quickly, which is quite inconvenient, especially for those who like or is forced to talk for hours.

Where is the proximity sensor on Android?

Proximity sensor in smartphone

The proximity sensor is usually located at the top of the smartphone - next to the front camera lens. On some devices the window of the sensor is clearly visible, on others it is not noticeable to the unaided eye.

To determine where on this smartphone is this sensor, in a call mode, move the phone away from your ear and close your finger with the area near the camera. When the screen turns off - you found your proximity sensor.

Proximity sensor in the phone: how to turn it on?

Usually in smartphones on Android, the proximity sensor is automatically turned on. However, if you do not have it working initially or you accidentally turned it off, you can turn it on again:

Open app "Phone" of the device, go to "Settings"(usual or long pressing the button of options of the device or button "Settings" on the touch screen);
Call settings

click on the item "Incoming calls";

Incoming call settings

Check the box or slide the switch next to "Proximity sensor".

Enabling Proximity Sensor

In the same way, you can turn off the sensor if necessary.

Light Sensor

The tasks of this sensor are extremely simple and are to determine the degree of outdoor lighting and accordingly adjust the brightness of the screen. Thanks to this auto-tuning of brightness, it became possible to save energy, especially if you want to optimize the consumption of your battery. Perhaps this is the oldest sensor in the mobile world, and even though there seems to be no way to improve the functionality of this sensor, the manufacturers, in this case, try to make the work with the smartphone even more comfortable.

For example, in the mobile operating system has the ability to adjust the auto brightness. Previously, the light sensor was fully automated and adjusted the brightness of the screen at its discretion. Now the user has the opportunity to monitor the operation of this sensor. You can easily determine the brightness level that is comfortable for you, and  takes this into account when calculating the brightness level for new lighting conditions. However, in order for the sensor to function correctly, it is necessary to make a small adjustment of the device.
