Google Meet Adding Emoji Reactions and More Tools To Improve Virtual Learning - Tech - Xiaomi Community

Greetings from Mi Community Bangladesh Tech Team! We hope you and your family are safe and well.

As the COVID-19 pandemic rages on, many schools continue offering distance learning as a way to keep both students and teachers safe. Google Meet is rolling out a handful of new features, including emoji reactions to help students better express themselves and more moderation controls for teachers.

Google says its “first priority” in Meet is to “make sure meetings are safe and secure.” Last year, it blocked anonymous users and let teachers control who can chat and present. New features over the upcoming months include:

End meeting for everyone, including in breakout rooms, to prevent unsupervised discussion after a teacher has left.
Mute all participants simultaneously.
Hosts control on whether students can unmute themselves.
Key moderation controls on Android and iOS apps.

Some other minor improvements coming to the tool include support for different skin tones in the reaction picker. Hosts and admins will also be able to ascertain the times that the reaction picker is available. There will also be improvements to the performance of the tool on Chromebooks and in low-bandwidth scenarios.

Last but not least, emoji reactions will be making their way to Google Meet, giving students a new way to engage with the class. And of course, teachers and administrators will be able to moderate the use of this feature so it will be used when appropriate.

Many of these features will be rolling out over the next several months or later this year. Overall, all these features will further improve the usability of the offering in educational setups. Of course, some of these features might already be present on competing services such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams.
