Welcome to Device Tech Bytes, Today I'm going to discuss the In-Display fingerprint scanner. The fingerprint sensor is a revolutionary thing! I mean, who imagined that you can secure your phone with a finger? Gone old days are unlocking the phone with a pattern or number lock, 90% of the phones available out there comes with a fingerprint sensor at the front or at the back! Even the phone in which you are reading this article is also having a fingerprint sensor, So few manufacturers re-imagined and implemented a Fingerprint sensor under the display of the phone.
Enough introductions, let’s just kick start off with the brief of Under Screen Fingerprint Sensor(In-display fingerprint sensor)! About the first In-display fingerprint scanner smartphone.
Vivo is the first company that introduced the In-display fingerprint device at CES 2018.
X20 Plus UD is the phone that was showcased at CES 2018 with Synaptics FS9500 Clear ID™ optical in-display fingerprint sensor.
Different Types of In-display fingerprint scanners
Optical Fingerprint Scanner:
It's all about capturing and comparing the fingerprints, They capture a 2D image(must be a high-resolution image with sharp details highlighting the lighter and darker regions) of the fingerprint and then compare it for the authentication. The scanner is using the backlight to illuminate the darker regions of the fingerprint. Using this we will get a sharper image. If your device is using optical fingerprint scanner light emerge on the fingerprint scanner area while unlocking the device or registering the fingerprint.
Ultra Sonic Fingerprint Scanner:
Ultrasound waves are used to capture the 3D images of the fingerprint. It uses the ultrasonic transmitter and receiver. The transmitter will transmit the waves while the device is resting as soon as a finger touched the fingerprint scanner area the part is reflected back. Then reflected ultrasonic wave is picked by the receiver. Depending on the intensity of the pulse, the receiver generates a 3D depiction of the fingerprint in high-resolution, along with its depth data. The ultrasonic fingerprint scanner is more accurate and secured compared to the Optical fingerprint scanner but it lacks in the authentication of the fingerprint speed.
Capacitive Fingerprint Scanner:
It is a commonly used type of fingerprint scanner today. It uses tiny capacitor array circuits that track the detail of a fingerprint. It uses the ridges of your fingerprint that is placed over the conductive plates which change the charge stored in the capacitor, while the valleys (air gaps) leave the charge on the capacitor unchanged. An operational amplifier integrator circuit tracks these changes that can then be recorded by an analog-to-digital converter, where this digital data can be analyzed.

LCD displays are the lifeline of budget range smartphones, And it's hard and expensive to implement In-display fingerprint scanner on LCD display since the optical sensors rely on visible light, it has to see through the display and OLED panels can only allow that since they are made of tiny LEDs with gaps in between them. Ultrasonic fingerprint scanner implementation is an LCD display that is more expensive to manufacture.

An interesting thing is Xiaomi working on implementing the In-display fingerprint on LCD display but still, it's in development and testing stage, hoping for Xiaomi is the first company to introduce the In-display fingerprint scanner on the LCD display to the world.
