[Other] Mi Note 10 vs Huawei P30 Pro

Hi All!

Now, you all know I love Xiaomi phones and have done for many years, but some of you probably remember my dark secret.

Last year, I sold my Mi 9, and bought myself a Huawei P30 Pro.

I'm sorry. I have a moment of weakness - a wobble if you will - and I fell for the trap of looking at DXOMARK and seeing that the P30 Pro was the best camera phone, with a score of 116 for its camera performance.

But, as you probably all know, I was lucky enough to get my hands on the Xiaomi Note 10 while I was in China.
This was Xiaomi's answer to the P30 Pro, and DXOMARK clearly thought it was up to the job, scoring it a whopping 121 points for camera performance!

So I'm in the position of being able to evaluate both devices on their own merits. And, in the interests of honesty, and objectivity, I'm not going to say that the performance of the Note 10 destroyed the P30 Pro. It was close, in some areas the Note 10 was better, and in others the P30 Pro had the edge.

Let's start with those. The P30 Pro is better for zoom, moon mode and also in general low light conditions. Sorry Xiaomi, but I'm not going to lie.
However, in what I would call 'normal' conditions - the types of photos that you would usually take - the Note 10 definitely had the edge.
So, probably 7 times out of 10, the Note 10 will take better photos than the P30 Pro, but for the more specialised requirements the P30 Pro would be better.

The Mi Note 10 images were taken in 27mp pixel-binned mode, the P30 Pro in 10mp pixel-binned mode, both using AI/HDR.
Photos were taken from the same standing position for each phone.

First, let's get Moon Mode out of the way...

Mi Note 10

P30 Pro

Obviously this is a clear win for the P30 Pro.
But come on - who cares? Moon mode is little more than a gimmick, and there are also suggestions that there may be a bit of sneaky Augmented Reality at play from some manufacturers, so the image of the moon may not be generated by the camera itself...

Now we've got that out of the way, let's look at the real comparisons. What I'd call 'proper photos' - the type of thing we would all usually take with our smartphones.

First, let's look at an image from the Forbidden City.

Mi Note 10

P30 Pro

At first glance these are pretty similar. The colours in the P30 Pro seem less realistic, the statue of the deer has a hint of orange and there is a little more 'noise' in the clear blue sky.

But let's zoom in - you'll be amazed at the difference in detail.

Mi Note 10

P30 Pro

It's pretty obvious that the Mi Note 10 has captured far more detail than the P30 Pro.
The pattern on the metal plate on the door is visible in the Mi Note 10 image, but in the P30 Pro there is just a vague suggestion of a pattern.

Finally, let's look at another image, taken at Jingshan Park.

Mi Note 10

P30 Pro

At first glance, these images are pretty close in quality. The wider POV of the Mi Note 10 is obvious here, looking at the extra detail of the door available at the bottom of the image. But again, the difference in detail will be much more obvious with a bit of zooming in.

Mi Note 10

P30 Pro

Again, the Mi Note 10 has a clear advantage over the P30 Pro. The diagonal lines remain smooth and consistent in the Mi Note 10 image, the P30 Pro has very noticeable aliasing leading to blocky, jagged-looking lines.

Wrap Up

So what have we discovered?

Well it's not great revelation that more pixels = more detail. The Mi Note 10 is clearly able to capture more detail in its images than the P30 Pro.
So, while there were some naysayers who proclaimed that the Mi Note 10 heralded a return to the 'megapixel wars' that we saw years ago, I don't think anyone could deny that this is much more than a gimmick.
The P30 Pro was widely acknowledged as the best cameraphone of early 2019, but aside from very specific situations, I'm more than happy to report that the Mi Note 10 has the better camera and it's very easy to recommend.

Put simply, it is not just the best cameraphone that Xiaomi has produced, it is the best Android cameraphone currently available.

Thanks @SirLukas  - very fair and honest comparison I felt. It is quite a difference between the 2 and like you say I'm willing to put aside a good @moon Shot' for a great every day shot.

Fantastic camera and good to see a second 108mp camera launching shortly in the shape of the Mi 10.

I have more photos of the moon. I think P30 artificially creates a moon texture.

Yes, I have the same suspicions, I think the P30 uses some Augmented Reality to achieve its results ;-)
