To update Redmi Note 3 bought in China, is it necessary to unlock bootloader? Thus far, I've tried updating to miui 8 without success using the updater app. The phone went thru the process of updating but when its complete it reboot with the same miui 7 as before nothing changed. So do I need to unlock bootloader in order to update or my phone just can't be updated? BTW my phone is on miui 7 stable 7.0.99.11 (LHFNYUN). Thanks for any help

Nope! You dont have to unlock the bootloader. Unless you want to flash to Global rom. I think the problem now is that your phone is under the china rom. I think you can try clicking the download links for the china update and see whether it works! http://en.miui.com/download-301.html#439
