messenger -- text and video chat for free by facebook can, at times, be downright intrusive. see how to muzzle it in different ways here. 1 pop-up window 
indicated there is the pop-up window. it can be set to appear when a message lands. it shows a circular profile picture of the message sender and will overlap if there are multiple senders. one can drag it around but it will always stick to the side edges of the screen. accept or deny the display of pop-up windows -settings -manage apps -messenger -other permissions -display pop-up window 
2 floating notifications* 
indicated there is a floating notification. it appears briefly when a message lands. take note that the mute button is accessible there. allow or disallow floating notifications -settings -manage apps -messenger -notifications either -show notifications or -choose up to four specific notification types then either -show notifications or -floating notifications *there may be a bug here somewhere as i was never able to make any changes i do here stick. 
3 lock screen notifications 
that right there is the least intrusive of all messenger notifications. one may want to leave it alone, but in any case... -settings -manage apps -messenger -notifications either -show notifications or -choose up to four specific notification types then either -show notifications or -lock screen notifications
