[Discussion] [Weekly Debate #3] Under-Display Vs Pop-Up Selfie Cameras: Which One Would You Prefer?

Hello Mi Fans,

Smartphone bezels have been slimming down dramatically in recent years, in turn bringing bigger displays and controversial notches. The selfie camera in a smartphone is one of the most essential features today. To include a decent front camera with a higher screen-to-body ratio, phone makers have had no other option but to use a notch or a pop-out/ Slider module. However, it seems there is another option- an under-display selfie camera. If you have to choose for your next smartphone, Which front camera set up would you go for? Pop up or in-display?

A camera that pops up automatically and goes back in seamlessly looks really, cool. Xiaomi has also implemented the pop up design. With the latest Mi 9T, Redmi K20/K20 Pro, we see this technology gradually making a place in our lives. The Redmi K20 series pop-up selfie camera features a mid-frame integrated rail design that uses a spiral stepper motor to lift and lower the camera. It can be popped up in 0.8s and has 6 custom lift sounds.

Pop up camers definitely brings an amazing and beautiful full screen display on the front. But there's legitimate concern that motorized camera modules have higher chances of breaking or failing. Not only that, a moving part is always going to be less durable and thats might be a fact. But as Xiaomi says, Redmi K20 series has been tested to last 300000 cycles. The front lens cover is made of sapphire, which is wear-resistant and scratch-resistant, which can provide stronger protection for multiple pop-ups.

And now, an in-display selfie camera is supposed to be ready to end the era of notches and pop-up cameras, and make future device design more neat and seamless. Oppo and Xiaomi have actually managed to create the seemingly impossible: a selfie camera hidden under an OLED display. No moving parts, no weirdness — just an elegant solution for an ugly problem. Xiaomi is working on a custom display that features a small transparent area made of a special low-reflective glass with high transmittance.

When the selfie camera is activated, the display area over the camera lens becomes transparent in an instant, allowing light to enter. This could be the ultimate solution for a Full Screen Display coexisting with a front camera. When not in camera mode, the transparent display works like a normal one, allowing content to be displayed in full. The display embedded camera combo allows more light into the lens, resulting in clearer and crisper selfies than the punch-hole solution.

The in-display system is elegant, and doesn’t rely on mechanical parts to operate, making it more desirable than the alternatives currently being used. However, we don’t know about any sacrifices made elsewhere to enable the camera as this technology is still under works. What is your prefered solution for maximizing screen-to-body ratio without compromising on practicality?

i want more moving parts in my phone, as moving parts never fail and will never get gunked up with dust and dirt
