![]() Dear Fellow MIUI-ers, What is Portrait Mode? Portrait Mode Photography in digital photography is a function of the digital camera that is used when you are taking photos of a single subject. When taking photos in portrait mode, the digital camera will automatically use a large aperture to help keep the background out of focus by using a narrow depth of field so the subject being photographed is the only thing in focus like what we have seen in our Camera Flagship Device Mi A1 last year. Dual Camera smartphones are the trend of this scenario as per my knowledge this was first introduced in Redmi Pro which uses a wide Angle Lens and Monochrome one but the technology developed and now we can take some cool Portrait pictures like DSLR using our Smartphone with introduction of combo of Wide Angle Lens and Telephoto Lens which we have seen in Mi 6 , Mi Note 3 and Mi A1. Portrait mode uses the Telephoto camera and some software trickery to create a photo with a faux bokeh - an artificially blurry background resembling the one that occurs naturally when you use a lens with a bright aperture on a large sensor camera. How does this Portrait mode work? We can classify this into 2 section one which uses hardware and another one which uses Software Processing Let's talk about Hardware here, which enables 2x optical zoom along with the ability to take portrait images with shallow depth of field by creating a bokeh effect which blurs a subject's background. The telephoto lens is the base for generating the effect and the wide gathers additional data. If you shoot a picture close to a subject with the telephoto where the background is far away you will see this natural blur occur even without portrait mode. So you’re already starting with a better optical stage. Is it a hardware thing or software thing? My answer is both, like what we have seen in Xiaomi Mi A1, which use the combo of Telephoto Lens and Wide Angle Lens which use the telephoto lens for bokeh effect but Google really surprised us with their latest Flagship Device Google Pixel 2 with their advanced image processing technology. Can we enable it in our Mi Devices which comes with single lens?? Yes, now we can enable Portrait Mode on all Xiaomi Devices which is running in MIUI based on Nougat or above or using Custom Roms. Here I am explaining you all how to enable that on your device. Kindly read all the instructions. IMPORTANT ADVISE: Install at your own risk. We are not responsible for any damage to your device.
