[Other] All You Need To Know About IP Ratings In Smartphone

Hello Mi Fans

Hope this month gone well for you. There are several luxuries that we expect of phones today. We expect them to have multiple cameras and a full, bezel-less screen. We also usually expect our phones to be waterproof, indicated by an IP rating but, What does this IP Rating means ? Well lets find out in todays thread.

  • What is IP Rating ?
IP stands for 'Ingress Protection' and is used to define the sealing effectiveness of electrical enclosures against intrusion from foreign bodies and moisture. The first number refers to how the device sealed against solid particles like dust; the highest you can get is '6' meaning total protection. The second digit is for water protection and the best you'll see on most is '8'.

First Digit – Dust protection (IPXX)

1. No special protection
2. Protection from a large part of the body such as a hand (but no protection from deliberate access); from solid objects greater than 50mm in diameter
3. Protection against fingers or other object not greater than 80mm in length and 12mm in diameter
4. Protection from entry by tools, wires etc, with a diameter of 2.5 mm or more
5. Protection against solid bodies larger than 1mm (eg fine tools/small etc)
6. Complete protection from dust (Most phones today have this IP rating)

Second Digit – Moisture protection (IPXX)

1. No protection.

2. Protection against condensation
3. Protection against water droplets deflected up to 15° from vertical
4. Protected against spray up to 60° from vertical
5. Protected against water spray from all directions
6. Protection against low pressure water jets (all directions)
7. Protection against water immersion. Devices are submerged for 30 minutes in 1 meter of water.
8. Device can be submerged in water to a greater depth and longer period. The conditions of immersion are set by manufacturer and testing facility – to be marked clearly on the product
9. Protected against prolonged effects of immersion under pressure.

  • What can (and can’t) you do with your water-resistant smartphone
An IP68 rating guarantees your phone protection in fresh water only. So it can handle being used in the rain, splashed with a drink of water, or perhaps even being dropped in the sink or bath. If it does get wet, you should dry it thoroughly with a soft, clean cloth as soon as you can.

Even if your phone is water-resistant, it’s not going to be protected from submersion in other liquids. So if you’re thinking of taking it for a swim, think again.

Seawater is full of salt, and like all corrosive substances, it’s not going to play nice with your phone’s insides. Your hotel pool, meanwhile, will have various chemicals in it to keep the water clean. These chemicals aren’t going to do your phone any good either.

  • Next Generation of Waterproof Phones
According to IDC, liquid is the second most common cause of damage in smartphones accounting for 35.1 percent of all devices repaired. However, that might change considerably in 2019 thanks to a new generation of waterproof phones with better protection. At the moment, phone makers either use physical seals or a nano-coating to keep water out. While the latter is limited to splashes, P2i - a leader in the technology - is working on an improved version of its plasma protection which will be IPX7. A nano-coating to this level will give partners more freedom with design and could even mean we see more handsets with removable covers and batteries again.Xiaomi used P2i coating in most of the Redmi and Mi phones ex- Redmi 7, Redmi 8A, Redmi Note 7 Series etc.

  • Conclusion
So Phones with IP Ratings is good but it doesnt means that it will save your phones from all the obstacles(Water, dust etc.). Do note that waterproof test is always done on fresh water, not on salty or other kind of Liquid. Also test is done on certain level that a phone should survive if falls in Water. So Do You have any phone which has IPXX Rating? So Do You have any phone which has IPXX Rating? Do let me know in the comment box.
