[Q&A] Double Tap to Wake

I have software related problem to global version of Mi A2 Lite (Black / 32GB ROM/ 3GB RAM). After receiving July 2019 update one of the core functions on this phone - "Double Tap to Wake" just stopped working and I really need this function back. The phone is part of the "Android One" program and there is no option in the whole phone settings to turning "Double Tap to Wake" function ON or OFF.

1. Download https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=by4a.setedit22
2. Open the app
3. Scroll down and look for gesture_wakeup
4. Tap on it and edit value to 1.
If you can't find gesture_wakeup then add it manually using Add new setting option at the top.

Additional optional step using PC:
1. Download Minimal ADB installer and install it
2. Open command prompt
3. Connect your phone using USB
4. Use the command: adb shell settings put secure wake_gesture_enabled 1

Hi,
By default the SECURE TABLE is protected, you need change this condition to write there.

After rebooting the phone couple times - the value stays the same

Try the first one. Doing the second only wouldn't work. The first method can also be done through ADB: adb shell settings put system gesture_wakeup 1

I tried all of above listed ways and neither of them works :(

I also confirm that I have the same problem, tried all the above and it didn't solved the issue, though the values do changes using ADB - all enabled, but still no working double tap.
Any advices how to get that feature back?
We know that the hardware can do it, and it's android, so there must be a solution.
Thanks for the information and help.

It turns out it was intentionally disabled in the July update. Source: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a2-lite/help/double-tap-to-wake-t3826918/page6

So the only remaining options are custom roms or downgrading? or we simply wait for Xiaomi/Google to release an update in the next month and we hope this will solve the problem?
