[Tips] X-EGG Vol 3 :Xiaomi Mi Home Gateway/ Hub - All versions explained

Hello Mi Community,

Time flies, so does technology.
The Mi Home ecosystem is expanding rapidly.
Nowadays, Voice assistants like Alexa, Google Assistant and recently Siri are integrated.
With Mi Home already presented in Google Home..
Apple's Homekit is compatible too, with the help of a slightly different Gateway/Hub.

X-EGG Vol.3 will show you which gateways exist and what they are capable of.

**Please note: In this Article I will mention Gateway and/or Hub but i refer to the same device. Through time Xiaomi & Lumi United changed the name from 'Gateway' to Hub.

What is a Gateway/Hub?

Probably most who read this already know what a gateway is.
For those who doesn't I'll explain it briefly.

The Gateway functions as a central hub with its purpose to connect/pair multiple sensors to Mi Home,
Xiaomi's Ecosystem (available for Android & iOS).They communicate over Zigbee.

Besides pairing, the gateway is used for creating automation rules between sensors and other Mi Home connected devices.
It's equipped with a built-in speaker and a LED light so it can be used as a doorbell,
(security) alarm,Night lamp and (Chinese) Radio streamer.

In the following illustration you can see how the Mi Home ecosystem works and which role the gateway furfills:

Who created the gateways/Hub?

Lumi United is the manufacturer of all gateways and released them under Xiaomi's Mi home brand,
known as Mijia (Mi=Rice Jia = Home) or
under their own sub brand named Aqara.

Want to know more about Lumi United?

What hubs are on the market?
Through time Lumi United released 3 different gateways/hubs:

Gateway Mi Logo:
2014-2016
Model number: DGNWG01LM

In 2014 the first Hub / Gateway was released.

This version is without the ability to listen to Online radio.
In 2016 this device was discontinued and didn't received new updates,
so it wasn't compatible with newer devices brought under Xiaomi's Mi Home Ecosystem

Gateway Mijia Logo:
2016 - Now
Model numbers:
DGNWG02LM (China)
DGNWG03LM (Taiwan)
DGNWG04LM (Hong Kong)
DGNWG05LM (Europe)

The Enhanced, newer version, upgraded with online radio control.
This gateway is known as v2.. or 2nd generation.
Introduced in 2016, the 'Mijia' gateway came on the market to replace the ones with the 'Mi’ logo engraved.

Initially only meant for the Chinese market, the gateway (DGNWG02LM) found its way in numerous households all over the world.
Once you install this version in the Mi Home App while connected to the (Mainland) China server you can set up automation rules between zigbee sensors and other compatible devices.

This gateway has been officially released over time in different regions with corresponding plugs.
Each region got its own modelnumber:

DGNWG02LM (China)

DGNWG03LM (Taiwan):

DGNWG04LM (Hong Kong)
No Picture Available

DGNWG05LM (Europe)

The China version is most popular:
Because of the fact the corresponding server has countless compatible devices.
Many of these devices wont be available in the list once your Mi home app is connected to a different region.
These are actually only meant for the Chinese market.

To get an Idea:
Switch between servers within the Mi Home APP and take a look at the list of compatible devices.

Example: list of available camera's China & Europe server:

Gateway Aqara Logo:
2018 - Now

Model number: ZHWG11LM

"Aqara's ZHWG11LM isn't a successor or follow up of  the Mijia hub"

Aqara is a brand established by Lumi United.
With Aqara, Lumi United wants to get their own share in the world of IoT.
Operating as a stand alone company, with their own employers, Aqara got their own support team to provide customers after sale services.

This hub comes with the Aqara logo and will be available in different regions with corresponding plugs (China, UK, US, EU).
It is similar to the Mijia version and is able to pair all zigbee powered devices which are visible within the corresponding region inside the Mi Home App.

A big advantage of the Aqara version is the possibility to connect the hub with its paired sensors to Apple's HomeKit.
Another difference is having the ability to install the hub to their own APP

Are there other devices that functions as a Hub?
Following devices only work while connected to the China server.

Mijia smart AC companion:
Model Number KTBL02LM

Make your Air-conditioning smart and use the companion as a gateway.
Can do the same as the Mijia gateway/hub
except being a night lamp, it doesn't come with a 'ring of led’.
the ring is black and contains an Infrared sensor for remote control.

"Many people call this device the Gateway V3"

The Mijia Smart AC Companion comes with a 16A 3 prong-plug that's a little bigger compared the plug from a normal 10A Chinese plug. Therefore it could be a problem finding a good adapter for using it outside China.
To let it work as intended you need a Chinese Air-conditioning.

Aqara Smart AC companion:
Model number:KTBL01LM  + KTBL11LM (Enhanced Version)

Actually there isn't much difference compared to the Mijia version except for its design.
The Aqara edition is squared while the other is round.

Be aware: 2 model numbers!
There are 2 versions were the latest one (KTBL11LM) is an improved version
with extra features like Cutting of powersupply, overvoltage and overheating protection.

Aqara Smart 1080p Ip Camera
Model number: ZNSXJ11LM

The first device that functions as a gateway/hub that can be powered on with a micro USB.
No worries about using an adapter.  The aQara smart 1080p Ip Camera is displayed as Camera Hub inside the Mi home APP.

Aqara G2:

Another camera, recently released. Can be powered by USB and is actually using the latest Zigbee 3.0 Wireless standard

Which One to Choose?

My personal advice to anyone reading this article
(especially those who haven't got any devices yet):
Buy the products that are meant for the region you live in.
To be certain you can download the Mi (Xiaomi) Home App and select your region in order to see which devices are supported.

More Xiaomi partners (VIOMI, Aqara, Roborock, Amazfit etc) are positioning themselves outside China.
They will sell their products with a certification mark that indicates conformity with
health, safety, and environmental protection standards based on that particular region (CE, FCC etc).
When it has such a marking these products are officially allowed to be sold in specific region.

For example:
The Roborock T6 will not work outside China, even if you have your Mi Home server set to China Mainland.
This device is not meant for any other region than China.
The Mi Air Purifier with Europe plug only works correctly when you install it on a European server.

Why people still buy the China Gateway (DGNWG02LM) ?
Many Mi fans, including me, bought this Gateway from a non official sales channel.
In my case, when i bought one there wasn't any other option available.
Another reason is the fact there isn't any gateway/hub available yet.

Pro's China version + Region : Cons China version + Region:
-The China server does offer a much larger list of compatible devices
Pretty logical since a lot of these devices are released before the launch of the Gateways/hubs targeting other regions.
- People all over the world can buy this model from unofficial channels.

- The China hub can be set on developer mode for those who want to use third party operating systems like HASS. This isn't available in the other versions (Not even the Aqara model).

- As mentioned earlier,
some devices might not work and probably more will be added to the list.
- I can't say it enough: Xiaomi's eco system for domestic users are intended to be for people living in China only.

- When there is a local service center in your country they can't help you with issues or warranty since other region devices aren't supported.

- Issues like lagging (later response of automation) could occur since you are connected to a server located all the way in China.

Mijia or Aqara Hub?
This totally depends on your own preferences. Use my guide to decide for yourself:)

Do You want to use your smart home with Apple's Homekit?
You should buy Aqara's version (Currently only working with the EU server)

Thanks for reading Episode 3 of X-EGG.
I hope you'll find this article informative enough to learn about all the versions and devices brought on the market.
any question can be left underneath and i will try to answer them all with care.

Special thanks to our great Admin:
