[Other] [Talking Tech #3] Discussing The DC Dimming Tech In Smartphones !

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to the 3rd edition of Talking Tech !

Smartphone OLED / AMOLED panels bring a bucket full of advantages. Some of them are:
  • They have better color accuracy and contrasts (including better blacks) and
  • They are thinner and brighter than traditional LCD panels.

So, it’s without fail the reason why smartphone manufacturers are shifting to OLED panels for their smartphones. But, the one big disadvantage that comes with these panels are in the way it handles the low level brightness. There are 2 different dimming techniques:
  • PWM (mostly used by OLEDs) and
  • DC (mostly used LCDs).

DC Dimming is a technology that is heavily in trend these days and a hot topic of discussion. This thread tells all about DC Dimming technology.

So let's begin.

Defining DC Dimming

DC dimming essentially controls the brightness by varying the power supplied to the circuit. Since Power = Voltage x Current, increasing or decreasing either of these inputs will vary the power supplied to the display panel, and thereby its brightness.

DC Dimming vs PWM Dimming

In the context of LCD displays that have a backlight, PWM is about switching the backlight on and off at high frequency. This is done at a fast pace and your eyes perceive the combined effect as low brightness.

The problem is that some people are more sensitive to this backlight switching and are affected by this flicker, particularly at low brightness. For such users, using phones that use PWM in low light results in eye fatigue, severe headaches, and migraine.

Most Important Question: Why DC Dimming ?

The reasons for using DC dimming in smartphones are:
  • OEMs have started been increasingly aware of possible health issues associated with PWM dimming. However, since only a group of people are actually affected by PWM flickering and the drawback associated with DC dimming on AMOLED panels, it has been provided as add-on feature.
  • Low refresh rate (below 60Hz) display or low refresh rate videos can also add flicker. Another factor is scrolling or fast animations on low refresh rate displays.

DC Dimming On OLED Panels

DC Dimming isn’t easy to implement for OLED screens, the kind OnePlus uses on its phones. The is because in AMOLED displays, each pixel is powered separately and reducing the voltage or current through these OLEDs also causes a shift in color.

With DC Dimming, you will notice different colors at different brightness levels. So, OEMs resort to passing high current through OLED at all times and maneuver off periods in the PWM cycle to lower brightness.

Therefore, most of the OEMs that are providing DC Dimming on OLED panels are providing it as an optional feature rather than a pre-enabled option.

Mi Bunny Suggestions

  • If you are having an eye strain or headache from being hooked on your smartphone screen for far too long, don’t blame PWM dimming just yet.
  • Try to build good smartphone habits, which includes setting your display brightness to comfortable levels (instead of at 100% at all times) and keeping a decent distance between you and your smartphone screen.
