The external ssd takes realky long to get "mounted" after each reboot showing :
"Reviewing current content"

when pluging in external ssd using otg , the same thing happens
using oreo 8.1 on redmi note 5 didn't show this
otm the system needs to format the otg ssd should these be re-formatted ?

Does this resemble your problem? Micro SD card issues after Pie upgrade (bug?)  http://c.mi.com/thread-2223750-1-0.html

seems like re formatting using android is the only solution, will check this asap : the only way when not root is the otg trick (the system  let the card be usable after the "scan" phase when used from the dual sim slot and does not ask for formatting there) .
step by step android pie upgrade , then with  the hotspot tethering issue...

A brand new file system will work for sure. It's the same I did for Camera: I created a new directory. The thing is I permanently fix stuff, I don't like workarounds :-D
I tried forcing the External Storage app to run but it didn't help. I just deleted and re-created the second space 1h ago, I still can't modify the SD card from it.

converting filesystem back from exfat to fat32 seems to solve many problems as far as miui android pie 9.0 is concerned

mount time was reduced from 20 min to 4 min using  a 128Gb sdcard formatted fat32 instead of exfat
