Microsoft had a host of announcements to make at its annual developer conference last week, Build 2017, chief among which were additions to the upcoming Windows 10 Fall Creators Update. Here are some of the key highlights from the event.

Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

The next update for Windows 10 places a large focus on productivity, particularly being able to resume your workflow wherever you left off, across platforms. Start something on your Surface, and you can seamlessly continue it on your Windows PC or iPhone. All your files and activities, sync across platforms from your Microsoft ID. Login to a new device and Cortana asks you if you want to continue where you left, with a new Timeline feature that shows you an overview of what you’ve been working on recently and the apps you’ve been using.

Another big change is to the aesthetics of Windows 10, with something called Fluent Design. The new focus here is on “light, depth, motion, material, and scale” in the Windows interface, with lots of blur effects, and subtle colour flashes to draw your attention to where it needs to be.

There’s also a new addition for home videos, Story Remix, that takes your videos and smartphones and turns them into video stories. Microsoft says the app can produce professional-looking video within just minutes. You can even take matters into your own hands with additional 3D features supported.

The universal Surface Pen

Microsoft’s stylus is a big part of the Surface’s popularity, and the company is now working to make it more useable across all its touchscreen devices. You’ll be able to use the stylus to interact with Windows, and Microsoft has even built a PDF annotation feature right into the Edge browser.

Mixed reality motion controllers

Microsoft has also debuted new motion controllers for its Mixed reality headset. With LEDs all across the controllers, they’ll have full motion tracking through sensors in the headset, rather than needing external cameras. The controllers will ship towards the end of this year, first off with Acer packaging them into a $399 bundle alongside the headset.

Copy and paste at any time

Microsoft is taking a page out of Apple’s book to build a universal clipboard, letting you copy and paste text across platforms and devices. Using this, you can copy something from your PC and then paste it into a smartphone app on both Android and iOS. It’s giong to be implemented into Microsoft Office apps first, before moving to other apps as well.

iTunes is coming to Windows

The unthinkable has happened and Microsoft is bringing the iTunes app to the Windows Store. Apple is expected to release a version of it for Windows by the end of 2017.
