Xiaomi MIUI 9 could feature split screen, Android O’s Picture-in-Picture mode

Xiaomi will rollout the MIUI 9 in the second half of this year.

Xiaomi was expected to roll out its latest MIUI 9 last year after alleged screenshots of the custom UI running on Android 7.0 Nougat leaked. The update hasn’t arrived yet, and Xiaomi’s devices are currently running on MIUI 8.2 which was released in February. Xiaomi though confirmed on Weibo that the MIUI 9 will be launching in the second half of this year. While we await the official rollout of the MIUI 9, the company appears to have accidentally leaked two new features to app developers

Posted on Chinese website Anzhuo (spotted by PlayfulDroid), Xiaomi has accidentally sent out an email to app developers about the latest edition of its MIUI which is believed to be the MIUI 9. The email reveals that the latest MIUI will bring two new features to Xiaomi smartphones, which are split screen and Picture-in-Picture (PIP). Split-screen feature debuted with Android 7.0 Nougat which launched last September. Split screen feature essentially allows people to use two apps at the same time. A poll conducted in April on the MIUI forum resulted to almost 80 percent people requesting for the split screen feature. There is speculation that Xiaomi’s MIUI team is working on bringing the split screen feature to smartphones running Android 6.0 Marshmallow as well.

Picture-in-Picture feature is one that exists in the Android O Developer Preview. This feature was earlier added as a part of Android TV in Nougat update. With Android O this feature will be available for smartphones and tablets now. A progress from the split screen feature on Android Nougat, the PIP feature brings multi-display and overlay support when launching an activity on a remote display. This feature will allow users to watch videos in a small window while using other apps at the same time.

Although Google will announce the new changes on Android O this month, the official rollout would happen sometime around September. It remains to be seen how Xiaomi would integrate the PIP mode in MIUI 9. ALSO READ: Android O Developer Preview: Here’s everything you need to know

Another feature that could land up on the MIUI 9 is screen recorder. From taking screenshots, with screen recorder, users will be able to record activities happening on their smartphone. Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun has said in the past that the MIUI will be much smoother, more stable and powerful in design. MIUI 9 is currently not based on any Android OS, and the rollout could happen before the official launch of Android O going by the expected timeline.
