Types of MIUI firmware: weekly differences from stable and other rom!!

For new users of Xiaomi smartphones and just newcomers to MIUI, it is often difficult to understand the types of firmware, their differences and why there are so many kinds of them. Therefore, many users simply do not update their devices or, on the contrary, wait for updates to the firmware, which will never be updated. Questions on this topic occupy the lion's share of all the questions we receive.

In this article we decided to conduct a brief review of MIUI firmware and help you to understand all the variety of firmware so that in the future you knew what a "weekly", "self-made" and what to expect from the firmware. So, we remember school notes. All MIUI firmware are divided into several types and subspecies.

BY ORIGIN

Initially MIUI is presented in two versions: English-Chinese (China ROM) and Global (Global ROM).

China ROM, the "English-Chinese" version is focused on China and is equipped with various functions and software relevant only for China. Of the available languages, only English and Chinese are represented in it, as the name implies.

Global ROM, it's Global, Multilingual, in its turn, is aimed at users outside of China and does not provide services for China, but on the contrary, Google services are installed. Many more languages are available in it.

BY TYPE

Developer ROM, it's also "Weekly", "Developer", "Beta". Developer's firmware is the most relevant and innovative, as it receives all the innovations first. This firmware is official from Xiaomi itself and first of all it was created for advanced users to test innovations. It is updated every week, usually on Friday, except for Chinese holidays and the presence of serious bugs, when developers delay the release of the update. However, do not be afraid, if you run into a mistake, most likely, next Friday it will be eliminated. And many users use the weekly firmware without worrying about bugs.
The release name of the development firmware is the date of its release. For example, the latest firmware is now called MIUI 8 7.7.20, which means that it was released on July 20, 2017. The first figure is the year, the second is the month, the third is the day.
Beta Stable, type of stable firmware that passes the test on 30% of devices before public release for all users. In this case, the firmware is released randomly for certain users who have included an item in the update settings - receive early updates! This is not Beta testers, but ordinary users! On how well the firmware works, it depends on its public release, sometimes everything is fine and the firmware goes to all users, but it also happens that it is recalled!

Stable ROM, it's also "Stable". This firmware, like the Weekly, is official and is released by the MIUI development team in Xiaomi. It is the main assembly and is a kind of standard: it is stable, all functions are debugged and optimized in it, all the bugs that are found in the weekly firmware are fixed. It is recommended to install it, if you do not seek all the innovations and related bugs, but you need a stable system without surprises. The name of stable firmware versions is not tied to the release date, but to the accumulated updates, so it is updated irregularly. Updates can come just in two weeks, and every three months.

Ported ROM, it's "Custom", "Unofficial". The number of custom assemblies includes various localized versions from third-party development teams, enthusiast assemblies and firmware versions for smartphones from other smartphone brands. Custom assemblies are always based on the Stable or Weekly official assemblies. They can also be updated just in a week, and at a great interval. Many custom assemblies are not updated by air, so you will have to install them yourself each time.

A self-made ROM is a kind of sub-type, a branch from Custom firmware. Sorry for such a loose interpretation of the name of these "versions" of the firmware, however, recently they have become even more and unscrupulous sellers do not disdain to install them on smartphones of trusting buyers. Basically, these are handmade firmware with a disgusting translation, frequent mistakes and ubiquitous bugs. Stable operation of such firmware is absolutely not guaranteed and often spoils the impression of the device. It is always recommended to install the assemblies of the first three types, or better simply Stable.
Other firmware versions. There are several more types of firmware, which is not so common.

TD ROM and WCDMA ROM - firmware created for a specific type of communication in a specific country. For example, TD version is created for the same type of 3G connection only in China. Phones with TD ROM will only work within China, and in our region the sense from them will be slightly more than zero. The phones with WCDMA ROM are designed for 3G communication, widespread all over the world. However, there are some varieties such as WCDMA HK, WCDMA Singapore, WCDMA Taiwan, WCDMA Malaysia, which also will not work outside these countries.

BY SIZE

Full ROM, the same "Full firmware package." This is the complete firmware file that you usually use when installing software from scratch or the first time. Also installing the firmware by downloading the full package often helps to fix some errors that were previously in the device. The full version of the firmware includes all applications and services, even those that have not changed in the update. Typically, a full service pack weighs from 600 MB to 2 GB.
Incremental ROM, it's the same "OTA update", "Update". Includes only new files, as well as updates, fixes and additions. Typically, this update comes to the devices by OTA (over the air - over the air). Such updates, as a rule, do not have a significant and weigh from 20 MB to 200 MB.
Thus, that the Developer firmware that Stable firmware you get in the form of OTA update, and if you want you can download and the full firmware package in the standard application Updater (Updates) of your device.

UPDATE

Official (global, English-Chinese / weekly, stable) firmware updates are always updated by air, except for incorrect installation or any other incorrect user actions that could damage the system files. In case your official firmware does not want to be updated, you must install the firmware in manual mode. The rest of the firmware is not looking for profile forums.
Custom firmware is mostly not updated by air, but requires manual installation. In the event that you have properly unlocked the bootloader, some custom builds will receive updates over the air.
And, most importantly. The firmware is updated only and only within the same assembly. That is, you can not upgrade through the air to a stable firmware, if you have installed a weekly and vice versa. But go through the phone in some cases, you can from a weekly to a stable and vice versa.
