Atlast the time has come where India took over US in smartphone market share. Market research firm Canalys data show that India has officially surpassed the United States to become the world's second largest smartphone market, while sales of the top two brands Samsung and Xiaomi almost monopolized nearly half of the market share.
Although the Indian smartphone market is still limited to the world's budget products but with the economic development of the past few years, many major brands started landing in the Indian market because users demand for high-end models is also growing rapidly.
As shown above, the Indian smartphone market has been dominated by the five brands in the past two years, with Samsung and Xiaomi being the most powerful. In the third quarter of this year (Q3 2017), the two brands sold 18.6 million smart phones, accounting for almost half of the Indian market. However, Xiaomi is proved as the real star, last year it's shipments were less than half of Samsung, but now it is almost already going equal with the Korean giant, and Xiaomi's shipments increased very rapidly on a high note by over 290% to 9.2 million units.
"The rapid growth of Xiaomi in India is definitely the best example of the industry," says Canalys analyst Dorset while Canalys analyst Rushabh Doshi said “Xiaomi’s growth is a clear example of how a successful online brand can effectively enter the offline market while maintaining low overheads"
However, Dorsey also said: "Xiaomi in India mainly rely on low-end products, in the mid-market. However, I am optimistic about Xiaomi that in the next few quarters it might go beyond Samsung. It is noteworthy that in the third quarter of this year, the overall growth rate of the Indian smart machine market is also very gratifying with an increase of up to 23%.
With Xiaomi taking the smartphone sales to a newer level with 4+ million smartphones sold just in a month, it can surely become the India's Top selling Brand in no time sooner. Not only that, with its strong and dynamic move towards global expansion Xiaomi has already become a well established brand.
