[Discussion] [How it Works #16] What is NFC and how does it work?

Hello Dear MIUI Fan's!
Today you'll know more about NFC and how does it work! More and more often in everyday life we hear about NFC technology. Smartphones with NFC, data transfer via NFC, payment via NFC. Let's see what kind of technology it is and what it is eaten with.

What is NFC technology?

NFC (Near Field Communication). The technology allows communication and data exchange between devices located over short distances. For example, between a reading terminal and a smartphone / bank card. The range of NFC is up to 10 centimeters.

Where is it used and what allows?

NFC technology is rapidly penetrating various spheres of life. Already, NFC is actively used:
  • When paying for goods and services (contactless payment by credit card)
  • When transferring files / data (transferring photos on a smartphone, playing music)
  • As an electronic key (NFC-technology for access to private data)
  • As an identity card (NFC chip with owner information)
  • When transferring funds (by touching the smartphone to the smartphone)
  • NFC-tags (by holding the smartphone to the NFC-tag, you can find out the information embedded in it. For example - address, phone, bank hours)

How does the NFC function work?

Now we will consider the question “NFC function in the phone: what is it?”
The operation of the NFS in the smartphone is based on the safety standards ECMA-340 and ISO/IEC-18092. These standards control the transmission speed, encoding, as well as the scheme for resolving conflicts between transmitting and receiving devices and activation scheme. Since the chip combines previously created standards, smartphones of a modern type “get along” with long-existing platforms. This becomes a determining factor if, for example, you recently purchased a smartphone with NFC and decided to emulate a bank card. In this case, it is important that the existing reader receives a secret card code. So, the NFC chip in the phone - what is it? It is a chip with a built-in antenna. The antenna works on electromagnetic induction. Reader Sensors (NFC tags) creates an air transformer. The current in the active coil (which transfers the file) creates a magnetic field that creates current in the passive (receiving) coil on the 13.56 MHz frequency radio waves. The transmit-receive distance is only 10 cm, so the battery charge is minimal.

Communication with other devices!?

The module can be used to exchange information between two devices that support the NFC function. It allows you to transfer and receive files from another smartphone. Exchange is carried out using the Android Beam program. It is available on all Android devices in version no lower than 4.0. The NFC communication standard allows you to transfer the following types of information:
  • links to web pages;
  • location coordinates and route on the map;
  • contacts;
  • Links to applications from Google Play.

It is theoretically possible to exchange any files, including audio and video. But because of their large volume, the transmission speed will be very low. Therefore, usually users do not exchange files, but links to them.
NFC in a smartphone is not an independent means of data transfer, but a kind of command device. Information is exchanged over a wireless connection. NFC instructs you to turn on Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and transfer the file. The advantage of the technology is that communication between two devices is established instantly.

Smartphone instead of card!

Phones that support the NFC function can be used as bank or smart cards. A mobile device is always at hand, which cannot be said about the wallet.
  • A smartphone with NFC can become an alternative:
  • to a virtual wallet (payment for goods and services);
  • admission to a club, pool or other indoor institution;
  • electronic key;
  • Metro ticket bonus card.

NFC adapter vs Bluetooth!

The question may arise: why equip smartphones with another standard for wireless communication with a small reception radius, if Bluetooth is already implemented in all devices? The answer is simple: with the similarity of the principle, these technologies have different properties, respectively, the scope of their application is different.
The main differences between the two modules are as follows:

The process of establishing communication.
Pairing devices via Bluetooth takes place in several stages: first you need to turn on the module, then start the search, and then select the desired name in the list. To use NFC, it’s enough, for example, to bring one smartphone to another, and the connection between them will be established automatically.

Connection speed.
A Bluetooth connection may take several minutes. In the case of NFC, the process takes a split second.

Radius of action.
In the latest versions of Bluetooth, it reaches 100 m, while NFC receives at a distance of no more than 10 cm. At first glance, this may seem like a drawback. But, given the scope of the NFC module, it becomes obvious that a small receive radius provides higher protection when sending information. Firstly, the risk of being intercepted by your attackers is minimized. Secondly, the possibility of an incorrect connection is virtually eliminated. Due to its wide range, Bluetooth technology is not suitable for making contactless payments.

The speed of data exchange.
NFC has it much lower than Bluetooth. Therefore, this technology is not suitable for sharing large files. The means of transmitting audio, video, photo is just Bluetooth (or another wireless module - Wi-Fi), and NFC provides an instant connection.

Thus, the NFC and Bluetooth modules in the smartphone do not duplicate, but complement each other. If one technology is used to send and receive files, then the other is used, first of all, for contactless payment.
