So, it’s without fail the reason why smartphone manufacturers are shifting to OLED panels for their smartphones. But, the one big disadvantage that comes with these panels are in the way it handles the low level brightness. There are 2 different dimming techniques:
DC Dimming is a technology that is heavily in trend these days and a hot topic of discussion. This thread tells all about DC Dimming technology.
So let's begin.
DC dimming essentially controls the brightness by varying the power supplied to the circuit. Since Power = Voltage x Current, increasing or decreasing either of these inputs will vary the power supplied to the display panel, and thereby its brightness.
In the context of LCD displays that have a backlight, PWM is about switching the backlight on and off at high frequency. This is done at a fast pace and your eyes perceive the combined effect as low brightness.

The problem is that some people are more sensitive to this backlight switching and are affected by this flicker, particularly at low brightness. For such users, using phones that use PWM in low light results in eye fatigue, severe headaches, and migraine.
The reasons for using DC dimming in smartphones are:
DC Dimming isn’t easy to implement for OLED screens, the kind OnePlus uses on its phones. The is because in AMOLED displays, each pixel is powered separately and reducing the voltage or current through these OLEDs also causes a shift in color.
With DC Dimming, you will notice different colors at different brightness levels. So, OEMs resort to passing high current through OLED at all times and maneuver off periods in the PWM cycle to lower brightness.
Therefore, most of the OEMs that are providing DC Dimming on OLED panels are providing it as an optional feature rather than a pre-enabled option.
