Last December 24th of 2018, just before Christmas Eve, Xiaomi debuted a new device in China under a new lineup, the Mi Play; a new budget smartphone for consumers and if you happen to follow the official Xiaomi social media accounts, you may also have learned about this device earlier for being used by Xiaomi to set a Guinness World Record for the world’s largest mobile-based dynamic puzzle with a total of 504 phones used.

At first glance, you can see a new design that differs from the currently available Mi phones, which instead of featuring a slide form factor or a wide notch to carry a handful of sensors, Xiaomi adapted the waterdrop design boasting an almost full-screen display experience with just having a half-moon / waterdrop-shaped notch at the top and a small chin at the bottom. It has a gradient finish that are available in different colors just like the Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite.

As for the internals of the device, it will be the first device to be powered by Mediatek's all-new MediaTek Helio P35 SoC that works with IMG PowerVR GE8320 GPU and uses the MediaTek CorePilot technology to deliver a power efficient experience. The SoC is said to use an intelligent task scheduling system along with thermal management and user experience monitoring technology to prioritise tasks and predict power usage. The 12nm process based Helio P35 also works with MediaTek's EIS (Electronic Image Stabilization) and RSC (Rolling Shutter Compensation) technologies to reduce the jello effect. Also, there are bundled AI enhancements to uplift your photos as well as dual 4G SIM support via MediaTek 4G LTE WorldMode modem. Mi Play will come in 4/64 GB for CNY 1099 (approx. Php 8,418.00) , 6/64 GB for CNY 1299 (approx. Php 9,950.00) , and 6/128 GB for CNY 1599 (approx. Php 12,248.00).

Unfortunately, there has been already a word from the company that it will NOT be up for a global release, thus, it will NOT be officially available in the Philippines or any other country outside the Mainland China in the near future.
