[Announcements] Redmi Note 5’s camera – is it a real beast?

Hello Mi Fans!

The Redmi Note 5 has recently been released, and as introduced in the launch event, the camera power of this phone is even on par with those of the current top flagships such as the iPhone X or Samsung Galaxy S9. In this article, I am going to offer my personal assessment of this new phone’s camera.

I have been testing this phone for more than two weeks, and the version I am using is pre-installed with the Global ROM. Please note that the Redmi Note 5 global edition is different from the Redmi Note 5 Pro – a variant specifically designed for the Indian market. The Redmi Note 5 Pro’s camera specs are therefore not the same as those of the Redmi Note 5.

In this review, all of the photos were taken by using the default camera app and no editing was added to reflect the true quality of the phone’s camera.
Redmi Note 5 Photos in Day Light

In bright day light, photos produced by the Redmi Note 5 retain excellent quality compared with other phones in the same price range. Most photos are very detailed and sharp. The colors of the photos, although quite dull in a few situations, are much more vivid in comparison with older phones from Xiaomi.

The dual pixel focus system works as fast and accurate as ever. It never took the Redmi Note 5 more than one second to focus on the subject, which is of great importance for those who never want to miss any unforgettable moments in their lives.

One valuable feature the phone’s camera has is the HDR mode. When set at auto, this mode is often turned on when the ambient light is too strong to preserve details of the photos. The results are often stunning, with photos’ colors and details are full of richness in all areas even though the lighting conditions are tricky.

Aperture f/1.9, Shutter speed 1/2779 sec, ISO 250

Aperture f/1.9, Shutter speed 1/20 sec, ISO 1000

In this photo, even though it started getting darker pretty fast (hence the high ISO), the camera did an amazing job of preserving details and colors while boosting the skin tone of the subjects. Moreover, noises were controlled extremely well, producing a quite clean image. However, as the shutter speed was quite slow, it was important to hold the phone very firmly.

When the ambient light is strong, details are well kept and fast actions are captured almost instantaneously.

Redmi Note 5 in Low Light
Overall, in low light conditions, although it takes the Redmi Note 5’s camera longer to focus, the focus speed remains relatively fast. In addition, the photos are not as detailed as those taken in daylight conditions. However, noises, albeit visible, are still well-controlled, which helps create fairly sharp images. The portrait mode in these conditions may warn users that it is too dark to take photos, but it manages to separate the subject and the background fairly accurately nonetheless. Meanwhile, photos’ colors are generally warm and saturated.

Redmi Note 5’s Portrait Mode and macro photos
Impressively, the Portrait Mode of the Redmi Note 5 works as well as its equivalent on many flagship phones. The subject and the background are separated accurately most of the times and the bokeh effect is not overdone to offer the photos a natural look. The AI technology also helps boost facial features of people of all genders and colors. Nevertheless, please be noted that in indoor and low light conditions, the phone may struggle to detect the subject to separate it and therefore you may need to do it manually.

Meanwhile, for close-up photos not taken in the Portrait Mode, the subjects are still visibly isolated. These photos are incredibly sharp, with vivid colors and high contrast.

Redmi Note 5’s selfie camera
The selfie camera of the Redmi Note 5 brings about sharpness and brightness to the photos. Furthermore, its depth effect feature can help produce photos with super blurred background without the assistance of a second camera.

The front camera is also equipped with the AI-powered Beauty Mode to make the subjects look stunning. Generally, the skin tone of the subjects is usually brightened and smoothened while their eyes are sharper and bigger. This trend can still be observed even when the Beauty mode is turned off.
The Beauty Mode has 5 levels for users to choose from, and to prevent the photos from looking artificial, it is recommended to not go over level 2.

Conclusion
Pros:
- Fast focus detection in daylight
- Photos have rich details, vivid colors and high contrast during daylight
- The Portrait Mode often accurately separates the subject, even in low light
- The AI Beauty mode works well with people of all genders and races
- Noises reduction is not overdone
- HDR mode functions fast and handy

Cons:
- Focus speed is slightly slower when it is dark

Verdict
This phone’s camera should have no competitor in its price range. On some occasions during day light, it even brings as many details and vivid colors to the photos as the flagship smartphones.
